Fortbildung im Freilichtmuseum
Bildung wird groß geschrieben im Freilichtmuseum. Seien es die vielen Gruppen, die täglich das Museum besuchen und das museumspädagogische Angebot wahrnehmen, seien es Fachgruppen, wie die kürzlich aus Köln angereiste Gruppe von Museumsassistenten/innen. Als Abschluß ihrer einjährigen Ausbildungszeit werden sie von der Firma Proaktiv in die interaktiven Bereiche der Museumsarbeit eingeführt und verbrachten in diesem Zusammenhang einen informativen Besuch im Roscheider Hof.

Information Event for Future "Museum Assistants" in the Roscheider Hof
Education as well as information for museum professionals are important aspects of our work. On the one hand many groups especially of young poeple visit the museum every day and take part in our educational programs. On the other hand there are groups of specialists from other museums, such as the group of future museum assistants from Cologne who recently visited the open air museum. In the final stage of there one-year
course they receive an introduction into interactive museum work, organised by the company "Proaktiv". In this context they spent one day at the "Roscheider
Hof" where they informed themselves about our work and especially about our Internet activities.

Gerberei Streit aus Metterich, Kreis Bitburg-Prüm
In den letzten Tagen wurden Teile der Gerberei Streit aus Metterich im Kreis Bitburg
abgebaut und im Museum zwischengelagert. Schon Museumsgründer Rolf Robischon war vor
über 20 Jahren auf das denkmalgeschützte Gebäude aufmerksam geworden. Ungeklärte
Besitzverhältnisse verhinderten jedoch seinerzeit eine Übernahme ins Museum. Inzwischen
war die Anlage baulich stark heruntergekommen und wurde schließlich veräußert. Der
Kernbau soll nun vor Ort wiederhergerichtet und in ein größeres Neubauvorhaben
eingebunden werden. Ein späterer Erweiterungsbau ist leider nicht mehr zu retten und muss
abgerissen werden.

Das Freilichtmuseum konnte verschiedene Maschinen aus der ersten Hälfte des 20.
Jahrhunderts sowie eine selbst gebaute Vorrichtung zum Pressen und Walzen von Leder vor
dem Untergang retten.
Im Magazin warten sie nun darauf, dass in einigen Jahren vielleicht
das Handwerk des Gerbers gezeigt werden kann, das in früheren Jahrzehnten in Eifel und
Hunsrück an Saar und Mosel, an Saar und Mosel sowie im luxemburgisch-lothringischen
Grenzraum eine wichtige Rolle spielte.

Streit's Tannery from Metterich in the district of Bitburg-Prüm
At the beginning of this month some very interesting objects could be acquired
by the museum: parts of an old tannery from Metterich near Bitburg which has operated
until 1964. Twenty years ago Rolf Robischon, the founder of our museum,
already became aware of the building that is classified as a historical monument.
It could not be transferred to the museum at that time, however, since the property situation
was unclear. In the meantime the complex has become partly delapidated and was finally sold. The
main building is now to be restored in its original place and to be integrated into a larger
building project. A younger extension is regrettably beyond repair and has to be demolished.

A number of different machines from the first half of the 20th century and a self-constructed
device for pressing and rolling the leather could be saved for the museum.
In our storeroom they are now awaiting the time when we will be able to demonstrate the
tanner's craft in the museum. In the past it played an important role in the
Eifel and the Hunsrück as well as on Saar and Mosel and in the border region between
Luxembourg and Lorraine.

Gärten ohne Grenzen
Wenn die Natur ruht, ist es Zeit , an den kommenden Frühling zu denken. So werden in diesen Wochen die Hausgärten im Freilichtmuseum neu angelegt. Vier neue Bauerngärten werden so entstehen, die jeweils so bepflanzt sind, dass sie der Zeit angepasst sind, die das zugehörige Haus repräsentiert. Ein Vergleich der Gärten wird dann später zeigen, wann bestimmte Kulturpflanzen Einzug in die Gärten und damit in den Kochtöpfe der Region gehalten haben.
Dass Zucchini und Chicoree bei uns relativ jung sind, mag vielen noch bekannt sein. Aber wer weiß schon, dass Tomaten frühestens Ende der 20er Jahre in den Bauerngärten auftauchen.
Die Anlage der Gärten ist Teil des von der Europäischen Kommission geförderten Projekts "Gärten ohne Grenzen", das sich zur Aufgabe gemacht hat, die alte Gartenkultur im deutsch-luxemburgischen Grenzraum wiederzubeleben. Neben den Gärten im Freilichtmuseum sind der Klostergarten in Schengen sowie der Barockgarten von Schloss Berg in Nennig in das Projekt einbezogen.
The Roscheider Hof Participates in the European Horticultural Project
"Gardens without Frontiers"
Now in winter it is the right time to prepare the gardens for the next
spring. At the moment several gardens in the open air museum are layed
out anew. Four new country gardens are being created, with plants that
are selected according to the
time of origin of the house that they belong to. Thus, the visitor will
be able to see at what time certain plants have become common in our
region. A comparison of the four different gardens will illustrate the
fact that many plants have only become part of our diet fairly recently.
Most people will probably know this in the case of chicory and zucchini.
But who would have thought that tomatoes did only turn up in our country
gardens at the end of the 1920ies.
The new gardens in our museum are part of the horticultural project
"Gardens without Frontiers" that is sponsored by the European
Commission. Its purpose is to revive the tradition of horticulture in
the German-Luxemburgian border region. Besides the gardens in the open
air museum the garden of the convent in Schengen/Luxembourg and the
baroque garden of the castle "Schloss Berg" in Nennig/Germany (both next
to the Mosel) are part of the project.

Winterarbeiten
Auch in den für Freilichtmuseen naturgemäß ruhigeren Wintermonaten gibt es hier viel zu tun. So werden zur Zeit die Vorbereitungen für den Wiederaufbau des Hauses aus Konz-Oberemmel getroffen.
Nachdem im Herbst der neue Weg für die Baugruppe Mosel/Saar erschlossen wurde, wir hier nun die zukünftige Baustelle vorbereitet. Hierfür werden einige Obstbäume umgepflanzt, damit die Erdarbeiten beginnen können. Sie dürften sich nicht einfach gestalten, weil das Gebäude mit seiner Rückwand über drei Meter tief im Erdreich liegt. Wenn alles klappt, können im März die Aufbauarbeiten beginnen.
Winter Work
Although the museum is open all winter, there are not many visitors at
the moment. Nevertheless, there is a lot of work to do. Currently we are
making the last preparations for the reconstruction of the house from
Konz-Oberemmel.
In autumn the path leading to the new group of buildings from the
Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region has been built. Now the building site is being
prepared. For this purpose, some fruit-trees have to be transplanted
before the excavation
can begin. It is probably going to be rather difficult, because the back
side of the building reaches down three meters into the ground.
The site for the reconstruction of this unique building with cellars
that can be accessed at ground-level from the front was carefully
selected, so that its position will be the same in the museum as in its
original place.
If everything goes well, reconstruction can begin in March.

Zweite Ausgabe der Roscheider Blätter
In den letzten Tagen des vergangen Jahres wurde die 2. Ausgabe der "Roscheider Blätter"
an alle Mitglieder des Museumsvereins verschickt. Neben einem ausführlichen Bericht über
die Museumsarbeit im vergangenen Jahr enthält das Heft wissenschaftliche Artikel über die
Datierung des derzeit im Aufbau befindlichen Schulhauses aus Würrich und über ein
neuerworbenes Schultertuch der späten Biedermeierzeit. Hinzu kommt eine erste Auswertung der
Besucherbefragung im Museum.
Wenn auch Sie gerne ein Exemplar der Roscheider Blätter beziehen wollen, empfiehlt sich
für nur DM 15.-- im Jahr die Mitgliedschaft in unserem Museumsverein.

2nd Volume of the "Roscheider Blaetter" has appeared
In the last days of the past year the second volume of the
museums's annual publication series "Roscheider Blaetter" (available only in German) was
mailed to the members of the Museum Association. Besides a
comprehensive report about the museum's activities during the last year
the booklet contains two scientific articles. One deals with the
problems of determining the age of the former schoolhouse from
Wuerrich that is currently being reconstructed in the museum, the
other is about a scarf from the late Biedermeier period that was
recently acquired. In addition to this there is a preliminary
evaluation of the results of the questionnaire survey among the
visitors of the museum.
If you are interested in receiving a copy of the "Roscheider Blaetter"
yourself, you can become a member of our Museum Association. For just
DM 15,-- (Euro 7,50) per year you not only receive a free
copy but you also have free entry to the museum at
any time during the year and you recieve an invitation to participate
in the annual excursion as well as in the general meeting that also
takes place once a year.

Wir schieben den Weg frei
Ein Schwerpunkt der Museumsarbeit im Jahr 2000 wird im Aufbau der neuen
Baugruppe Mosel-Saar-Ruwer liegen. In den Herbsttagen 1999 wurde schon einmal
der Weg, der diese Baugruppe erschliessen wird, geschoben (Bild), so dass nun der Museumsrundgang
um eine zusätzliche Schleife verlängert wird. Diese Neuerung wurde bereits in
den virtuellen Museumsrundgang auf diesem Internet-Server eingearbeitet. Neben dem im Aufbau befindlichen Haus
aus Oberemmel der neuen Baugruppe wurden als weitere neue Stationen der Clambour-Pavillon
und die Weidenpflanzung (für Weidenäste zum Aufbinden der Weinreben) und das
Lohewäldchen (für Eichenlohe zum Gerben von Fellen aus Eichenrinde) eingearbeitet.
A New Group of Buildings in the Museum
In our museum, one of the main tasks of the new year 2000 will be the
construction of the new group of buildings from the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer
region. In the autumn of 1999 a path leading to this new little
"village" was shoved free (to be seen on the photo), so that the
circuit around the museum has been prolonged by an additional loop.
The first house of the new group that is currently under reconstruction,
a sandstone building from Oberemmel near Konz, was deconstructed and
transferred to the museum during the summer of 1999.
In the virtual tour around the museum this novelty has already been
included. Other additions to the virtual tour are the so-called
"Clambour Pavillion" and the little wood of willows
(needed in viniculture for binding the vines) and oaks (supplying
tanbark).

Ein gutes neues Jahr 2000
Das Freilichtmuseum wünscht allen Freunden und Besuchern ein gutes, neues
Jahr und hofft, dass Sie den Jahrewechsel ohne Computerabsturz, ausgefallene
Heizung und ähnliche Unannehmlichkeiten überstanden haben. Ab diesem Jahr
versuchen wir für unsere internationalen Gäste
wenigstens eine Kurzfassung der aktuellen Meldungen auch in
Englisch anzubieten.

new year! We hope that at the start of the new year neither your
