Mill Museum "Molitor's Mill"

In this completely preserved historic water-mill you can see the functioning of the nearly hundred year-old mechanics that stretch over four storeys. The mill building was erected in its main parts in 1834, the mechanics that are completely preserved stem from around 1900. In 1994 the mill was recognised as element of our "cultural heritage" and was given the title of "technical monument". It is the private property of the brothers and sisters Branz. During the opening hours guided tours take place continuously which include the putting into operation of the mill.

School classes and children:

The mill museum is particularly interesting for children and school classes, since the whole mill can be "experienced", from the cereal grains to the rotating millstones. There are no signs "do not touch", instead we have special leaflets for children that explain how our mill works.

How to find us:

Molitor's Mill is situated in Schweich on the river Mosel, a few kilometers downstream from Trier. The mill lies next to the brook "Föhrenbach" outside the town in the direction of Hetzerath, Salmtal and Wittlich.

By car:
If you visit us by car, the easiest way to find us is from the motorway exit No. 129 "Schweich" of the motorway (Autobahn) A1. If you approach Schweich from Trier you drive on to the motorway junction "Moseltal" and then take the Autobahn A1 in the direction of Köln (Cologne), which you then leave again at the first exit ("Schweich"). After leaving the motorway you drive in the direction of Hetzerath (not towards the town center of Schweich!). After 100 meters there is the hotel "Leinenhof" on the left with a large carpark, which is also suitable for buses. Follow the signs around the left-hand side of the hotel and you come to our mill museum.

By public transport:
If you want to visit us by public transport, trains and buses will take you to Schweich railway station. (There are trains from Trier and Koblenz/Wittlich regularly, about once per hour.) From the station it takes about 30 minutes by foot to get to the mill. Simply follow the railway embankment in the direction of Wittlich/Koblenz. The mill is situated about 1 kilometer outside Schweich on the right-hand side of the embankment, near a subway.

By bicycle:
Molitor's Mill can also very well be visited by bicycle. Schweich lies on the Mosel cycle track, on which you can drive by bike all along the Mosel and its tributaries, e.g. Saar and Sauer. From Schweich you take the cycle track Schweich-Hetzerath in the direction of "Hetzerath/Wittlich", which turns away from the Mosel, and follow it to the hotel "Leinenhof". Follow the signs around the left-hand side of the hotel to the mill museum.

History of the mill

The mill was erected in 1824 by the tanner Christoph Denhard and the armourer Nikolaus Scholzen. In the beginning it served as oil and tan mill and for grinding forgery products. It belonged to the district of Dreiersbach on the "Brühlsgässchen", that is, on the brook "Föhrenbach".
Since July 7, 1830 the mill is in the property of our family. The new owner was Johann Molitor (1791-1870) who stemmed from the mill "Büchelsmühle". During his time the mill was set up for husking and milling grain, and permission was obtained to add a second pair of millstones.
From 1870 to 1913 Johann Molitor (1840-1913) directed the mill, who was followed by our grandfather Nicolaus Molitor (1875-1938).
After his death our grandmother Anna Molitor (1882-1951) directed the mill together with her youngest daughter Hedwig (1919-1984).
In 1946 Hedwig Molitor married the miller Anton Branz (1915-1992) from Rusenberg (district of Biberach/Riß) and the couple took over the direction of the mill.
In 1972 Molitor's Mill was shut down according to the "Mill Closure Act" of the same year.
In 1992 it became the common property of the brothers and sisters Branz.
In 1994 the mill was declared architectural and technical monument.
Since 1997 it has been opened to the public again by the Branz family and can now be visited in the course of a guided tour with demonstration of the functioning of the mill.
