There are great differences in the development of agriculture in the region of the Moselle and Saar. There are barren low mountains and valleys with a mild climate, but there are also fertile strips of land such as extensive parts of Luxembourg, which the Saargau belonged to until 1815, or the Bitburger Gutland (estate land). There were also great variations as regards farming technology: whereas several areas of Luxembourg and Lorraine benefited from the great progress in technology which had taken place since the 18th century in Belgium particularly, in parts of the Eifel and the Hunsruck almost mediaeval conditions prevailed right up into the 19th century.
